My Mom came over to Olin on Sunday to pick Jay and me up to go back to their house. We had a great time with the Slaters and had a lot of fun playing with Ethan and Audrey. We're hoping to spend some time with them again soon!
Mom drove Jay and I back on Wednesday. She decided she was going to visit Grandma and Grandpa, making the extra stay for us a little easier. It was an eventful journey on the way home.
We stopped at Panera in Cedar Rapids. I took the opportunity to feed Jay some solid food and share some bread with him. As we were getting ready to leave, Jay started throwing up. Not spit up, throw up. Everything he had eaten (which wasn't very much) had started to come back up. After a quick clothing change for Jay and myself, we were back on the road.
With Jay not feeling well, I did a huge no-no and held him the rest of the way home. He threw up two more times before we got to our house. He did sleep for quite a bit of the journey. He had a few loose poopy diapers once we had been home for a while. I gave him some Pedialyte and he did eat some formula that he has kept down. He was his normal bouncy self and fighting sleep by 9:00. It took about two hours to calm him down enough to go back to sleep.
Of course, that's when I started throwing up. At this point, we're not sure if it's something we ate, or if we got whatever Jamie's family got, or if it's something else all together. Needless to say, Jason is going to have his hands full tomorrow if both of us are still sick. If I'm sick, he's staying home for sure.

Christmas Time
Jason, Jay and I celebrated our Christmas on the 22nd, the day before we left for eastern Iowa. It was pretty late by the time we were done with presents. Once Jay had his bath and got into his jammies, it was well after 10. Santa gave me the movie "Kung Fu Panda 2" so Jason and I decided to watch it. We didn't get to bed until almost 1. That wasn't such a good idea. We got up around 8 the next morning and still had to finish up packing and put everything into the pacifica.
We got to Miles around 1:30. We had chicken noodle soup for supper then opened prezzies. Jay was such a good boy for the trip. He did his best to open prezzies. He liked the big box that was for Jason and me. It ended up being a new convertible car seat for Jay. He almost weighs too much for the car seat he has now. He had a hard time falling asleep, but once he did, he slept pretty hard.
Today we are traveling to Olin for more Christmas time. Hopefully more traveling will not bother Jay.

They're In!!
That's right....Jay's pictures are here! I'm very excited because they turned out so well! I'm sure it would have been hard for them not to since he's such a cutie! He and I have been having a busy week.
Monday we went shopping for formula after we stopped at food service to say Merry Christmas to my old co-workers. Tuesday Jay and I were a little under the weather. Jay seemed to still be quite stuffed up and tired and I was battling an almost migraine. (It didn't turn into one, but it sure had potential!) Wednesday was Baby Talk, soup luncheon at the church (entertained by the organ), to Walmart for picture pick up, and later that night back to church for the kids pajama party and chancel choir. They didn't have anyone in the nursery, so Jay got to sing in the choir too. Thursday I decided it was a good day to not go anywhere. Jay and I hung out at home, laughing and having a good time. We read his library books and watched a Christmas movie. Friday I spent a good portion of the day working on a medical transcription test. Our friend, Adam came down to spend the weekend with us and surprised us with my sister Jordan! Jay thought it was great to have both of his Godparents visiting.
Today was another veg out day. I spent most of my time finishing my test. I didn't get a lot of my daily chores done, but I did spend a lot of time with Jay. Jason and I were lucky enough that Adam and Jordan volunteered to watch Jay for a little bit so we could go for a walk outside. It's been unseasonably warm and we wanted to enjoy it for a bit. Jay and I also Skyped with Mom and Dad for a little bit this morning. I think Jay's pretty excited about seeing them next week. Probably not quite as excited as I am, but I'm sure it's pretty close.

Cute Little Boy
We had some visitors this weekend. Jason's parents decided to come see the Christmas cantata the choir was performing. They had to come down Saturday since the 8:30 service was the cantata. Since they came down Saturday, we all went to Tuba Christmas! It was a lot of fun and Jay really liked the music. He did try his hardest to chew on the pew in front of him, but we were able to keep him away from it.So Sunday I sang at the 8:30 service, stayed in-between services and rang bells at the second service. All of us then went to lunch before Jason's parents had to leave to go back home. We had a wonderful time with them here and I know Jay had a good time with them as well.
Jay did have a flu shot on Saturday. I took him to the doctor since he was still congested. He's all right, except for the congestion. Apparently there is a cold virus going around that just hangs on for quite a while. Since he doesn't and hasn't had a fever, the doctor said there wasn't anything we could do except the normal congestion stuff. Last night, Jay slept for over 13 hours with a brief period of eating and a diaper change at about 8 in the morning. He was one tired little boy! He was definitely a really good boy today while we ran errands and stopped at food service to see my former co-workers. They think he was such a cutie!

On the Mend
As we begin a new week, I think we're mostly well. I'm on the very end of this cold and Jay is still sneezing stuff and a little congested, but he is able to sleep on his own again. Jason is still tired, but that's pretty normal for the weekend. (He does work early on Saturdays.) I'm sure we'll be completely better by the end of this week.
Jay had pictures taken Wednesday. We had them taken at the PictureMe studio and he is so adorable!
Isn't he just a ham?! The photographer had a good time with him. He was pretty cooperative and quite smiley!
Jay and I went to church on Saturday for the men's group omelet breakfast. Jay wasn't able to have anything, but I definitely enjoyed my omelet! There were several ladies there that I knew and they all wanted to see or hold Jay. Santa was even there! Jordan came up later that afternoon after visiting with Grandma and Grandpa Peterson. She loved holding Jay! She even got some good pictures and video of him. Jordan watched him while Jason and I went to see the new Muppet movie. We thought it was pretty good. Of course she left today so she could be home to get some rest before she goes to work tomorrow. We're very glad she was able to come out and visit. Hopefully we'll be able to see her again soon!

Tiredness
The last few days have been quite exhausting. Jason has developed a cold and apparently gave it to Jay as well. Jay can't sleep laying down because of his congestion, so we've been sleeping on our couch. I hold Jay while we sleep, so he's upright. Unfortunately, that means I don't sleep very well. To top it all off, Jay has had two teeth pop through! You can't see them when he smiles, yet, but they are there! He's been pretty fussy all weekend between the teeth and the cold. We'll get through it!
Jay has been sleeping quite a bit, but it isn't very long most of the time. It's usually long enough for me to get something started. Hopefully I'll be able to get a few things cleaned and be able to get the Christmas decorations out.
*I typed this from my phone. I'll put up a new background next time.

Holidays Have Begun
We have survived our Thanksgivings. We had a good time being with family and eating lots of turkey. I am now busy trying to get things in order for us to be able to decorate for Christmas. Thanks to Jason's Mom, we have a beautiful wreath adorning our front door. We re-arranged our living room, but still need a space for our tree. We're not sure if Zara will leave the tree alone this year or not. It should be interesting to see if Jay will be crawling by Christmas or not. He's been trying to for a little over a week. He's figured out how to lunge forward, but not how to get up on hands and knees to go forward. It'll probably be any day now!

Busy Busy
It's been a busy week. I've been working on making items for the craft fair. I have carmel corn left to make and instructions to print off for some of the other items. It's going a lot better than I thought it would. I don't feel rushed like I thought I would.
Jay has broken out in hives. We've called the doctor and he thinks it may be a reaction to a virus. We had been feeding him applesauce and oatmeal for a couple of days beforehand. The doctor said to go ahead and keep feeding them. I stopped the applesauce, but continued on the oatmeal. Jason believes the hives have gotten worse, so we're hoping to actually see the doctor today.
I'll be working on getting some laundry done so we can start packing for our trip to Olin. I'll be at the craft show on Saturday and we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving on Sunday. I can hardly believe that Thanksgiving is next week! The time has gone by so fast!

Change in Date
The pediatric urologist called to reschedule Jay's surgery. It seems she will not be at work on January 12th and needed to reschedule all of her appointments. His surgery will now be January 19th. We are still planning on staying in Iowa City the night before and night of. I will keep everyone informed!
Last night, I tripped and fell in Jay's room. I hurt my knee, scratched up my ankle and bruised the heck out of my upper left arm. I went to the chiropractor again today (we usually go on Tuesdays) and I was really messed up! I feel better, except for a headache. I'm not sure if the headache is from not having enough water, stress from Jay's doctor appointment, or if it's trying to find enough time to work on a craft show, looking for a job and working on a quilt. I think I may also be trying to do to much with the church all at once. I like the church groups I'm in. It's hard to get the ambition to go sometimes. Especially the quilting group. They meet from 10 to 4 on Tuesdays. Tuesday is Jason's day off and it's always a "battle" to see where Jay is going to be. I've already told the quilting group that I can be there for only a couple of hours and they are always happy to see Jay. Jason always has stuff he wants to get done, but then ends up saying he'd rather spend time with Jay. The choirs are nice because the church has people in the nursery to watch Jay on Wednesdays. I'm sure I'll find the way to balance everything out soon!

Sorry!
First, I would like to wish a belated happy anniversary to my mom and dad! It slipped my mind yesterday and I'm truly sorry!
I have started to practice with the churches bell and chancel choir. It's been really nice to have some adult time and know that Jay is being well taken care of. (I'm given a pager for emergencies.) It gives Jason some time to unwind before we get home. It's also nice being able to make music that isn't a kids song again.
We had Jay's consultation for his hypospadias surgery yesterday. We were told the procedure would be about three hours and we are able to be with him up until he goes into surgery. We were also told that he should be able to go home the same day, We will most likely spend the night before and night of in Iowa City. (Not our favorite place to be, but we'd rather be close.) They also told us that he will be able to ride in his car seat all right, but we may want to bring some extra padding, just in case. His surgery is scheduled for January 12th. We won't know what time until three days before.
On a different note, I've been pretty tired since we've come back from our "vacation". I'm not sure if I'm coming down with something, or if I'm just extra stressed from trying to catch back up. I know the last couple of nights have been awful sleeping between Jay's appointment and the extra caffeine. I'm sure that the extra hour of sleep this weekend, (just in time for my birthday) will help out. I'm also calling a friend of mine to see if she would be willing to watch Jay for a little while on Monday to try to get some housework done.

There's No Place Like Home
Jay and I made it home safely today. It was a three hour drive instead of a two and a half hour drive. I think that's pretty good! Jay slept most of the way and slept some more after we got home. I still have quite a bit to unpack, but little things make a difference. We are very lucky to have families that were willing to put us up for the time we were visiting. And for all of the things they are willing to help us with. Jason's family sent us home with some more baby things and some of their abundant food. My family sent us home with apple pie filling and apples. I'm sure they would have been more than happy to send tomatoes and peppers with us as well!
We had a wonderful time on our vacation, but it's nice to be home. Jason decided to come home early to spend some time with us. He doesn't work tomorrow so he'll have lots of time with us.
I'm not sure who Jay is looking at, but he has such a cute look on his face! He was extremely happy to see Jason. Jason played with Jay until supper was ready. I'm sure he's looking forward to some time with him. It's going to be a long week trying to get back to "normal" and trying to get some food processed.
Next week we take Jay to the urologist in Iowa City or his hypospadias consultation. I'm a little nervous about when they want to schedule Jay's surgery. I know Jay will be fine. Just keep him in your thoughts and prayers for us!

More Vacation
We're in Olin now and still having fun. We've gotten to ride in the Slaters' new combine and tomorrow the plan is to go visit more grandparents and visit a pumpkin farm. There is a lot of harvesting going on! We've gotten to play with Ethan and Audrey and visit with Grandma Rose. There are new toys to play with, too. I'm hoping I'll be able to can some jalapeno jelly before I leave, but it's not a top priority.
I think Jay is really starting to miss Jason. We Skype with Jason every night, but Jay is starting to get fussy when we talk. I think Jay misses his bed too. (I know I do!) We'll be going home soon enough, though, and are very thankful we have a wonderful family that let's us visit and even encourages it!
Here is Jay getting ready for his first tractor ride! I think he had a good time with Grandma, especially since Mom was holding him.

Vacation
Jay and I are enjoying our vacation. We arrived Friday afternoon after an almost 6 hour drive. (Jay was pretty after our first stop. He did sleep a little more after that, then not again til we were almost to Preston. It was a long drive.) We went with Mom and Dad to the Northeast football game to see the marching band perform. It was very windy which made it pretty cold. Jay slept until 10 am Saturday morning since we wore him out so much!
We took it pretty easy on Saturday. Dad watched Jay, Allegra and Mason while Jamie, Mom and I went to a woman's group at their church. It was very fun and it was nice to have some girl time. We used Skype to talk to Jason for a little bit, then went to bed earlier than we normally do.
Today we went to church, then the fireman's pancake breakfast. Grandma and Grandpa Jacobs were there to help hold and entertain. We also Skyped with Jason again and will continue to do so everyday we're gone.
We have also discovered that Jay does not like the work "ta-da". Whenever Dad says it, he starts to cry! It's strange. I hope he grows out of it.

Ready, Set, GO!
Jay and I are just about ready! We leave tomorrow for our "vacation" to Eastern Iowa. We are spending the first part of the week with my parents, then Wednesday we travel to Jason's parents and spend the rest of the week with them, leaving Monday. It should be a fun and exciting trip. I've been told there are lots of things planned already and we are going to visit other relatives so I'm sure our week will be jam packed and we'll never have a dull moment!

All Right
I just wanted everyone to know that I was having some chest pain this morning in the middle of my breast bone. I DID go to the doctor and she listened to my heart (normal), my lungs (normal) and checked for tenderness (none). I did not have any symptoms of a heart attack, or any other major or life threatening ailment. She believes my esophagus is having spasms which is causing the pain. It comes and goes, always in the same spot. She said if anything changes to go to the ER, but if things stay the same just to wait it out. If the pain gets really uncomfortable, I'm to take some Tylenol.
I did some investigating today and found out there is a crisis child care number we can call in case of some emergency child care. It is not part of the department of human services and is not foster care. It finds someone to watch your child/ren for up to 72 hours if you are in need of it. I'm glad I found out about that, especially since Jason isn't always the easiest person to get a hold of while he's at work. I also found out some information about different parent groups that meet and places where Jay can go for some other children interaction. The church Jason, Jay and I have started going to offers a nursery during Wednesday night activities to help parents be involved or take different classes they offer. I started going to the quilting circle last Tuesday and am very excited about what they are teaching me. I hope to be able to join in quilting on actual quilts soon!

Pictures
I just wanted everyone to know that I have posted Allegra and Jay's baptism pictures on DropShots.
I had cavities filled yesterday and it took 3 shots of a general numbing agent and 2 different rounds of shots around the tooth to actually get it numb. I ended up coming home with a pretty bad headache. Luckily, Jason was off yesterday so he was able to watch Jay while I took a much needed nap.
Jay and I have a busy day planned. It's Baby Talk day, and I have several things planned to bake today. I also have some errands planned, so he gets to spend some time in his car seat.

Time for Fall
We had a wonderfully busy weekend. We made a whirlwind trip back to eastern Iowa to have Jay baptized. It was wonderful being surrounded by family.
Now that we are home, it is time to get back into our routine. Our friend Jeff has been staying with us while he finds an apartment. He has found one that he is currently in the process of trying to rent. He's hoping to be moving into the apartment next week. I will be going through several of my cupboards to get rid of some clutter and Jeff has shown some interest in rummaging through it to see if there is anything he would be needing for his new place.
It turned colder here for a little while, but this week is supposed to be in the 70's again. I have made it a goal to go through our clothes and get our winter clothes out by the end of the month. Of course that's a little easier with Jay since the clothes he actually fits into fit in his dresser. And it doesn't hurt that I end up going through his clothes every month or so.

Time
I have been doing a lot better about dividing my time between taking care of Jay and keeping my house somewhat neat and looking for a job. Jay is pretty good about entertaining himself in his bouncy seat now. He has a few more toys that are hanging up that he can actually grab a hold of.
I've also been making progress on Jason's mom's quilt. [p'
]43\54 (Zara's contribution to the blog today!) I have a goal of getting a little bit done each day, and that seems to keep it on track.
Other than that, Jay is still a little congested from his cold, but he seems to be pretty happy...until he's hungry. Jason is back to working Saturday mornings for CyRide. He isn't very happy about it, but it's supposed to be until November. I still haven't found anything, but I've been trying to come up with ideas to help supplement our income without an actual job. It's a short list, but it's something.
We are getting ready for Jay's baptism on the 18th. I have found it a little difficult in planning it since we're in Ames and the service is in Andover. We're very excited and happy about!

Road Trip
Jay and I had quite the weekend! We left Friday to go to Miles and stay with my parents for Allegra's baptism. We saw a lot of relatives and friends. We did spend a lot of time in the car, however. We did have a good time and enjoyed ourselves. In three weeks, we will be celebrating Jay's baptism in Andover and making the trip once more.
I was asked if Jason and I posed Jay in the picture to the right. The answer is no, he did that himself. Most of the time when we feed him, he puts at least his left arm back like that, but that time both of them went back. He's such a ham!
Here is a video of the first time Jay went swimming. The water was a little chilly at first, but once you were in it, it wasn't so bad.

Back At It
So, at the suggestion of Jason, I am now using Firefox to blog as opposed to Internet Explorer. Seems Firefox will let me post. I'll just have to remember to use Firefox for blogging!
Things have been pretty tame around here. Jay and I are having lunch on Wednesdays with the Baby Talk parents. We walk to a park and play with the other babies, then walk home. Jay usually falls asleep on the way back. We still don't have a nap/sleep schedule worked out yet, but it seems to be getting a little more routine, when he takes more than a 10 minute nap. We do love to play with him! And he loves to play with us!
I'm still looking for an at home job. It seems to be hard to get the experience everyone wants when no one is willing to hire you. I still have a few applications to fill out and some reports to transcribe, so we'll see what happens. In the meantime, I'm having a wonderful time watching Jay grow and develop.

More Visitors
Monday we were lucky to have Mom and Dad come visit us. We didn't do much when they got here Monday, but a lot of the stuff they had planned to do didn't work out either. One thing they did get to do was hold Jay. Tuesday we made a visit to Reiman Gardens and saw a lot of butterflies, flowers and other plants. Wednesday they headed down to Des Moines. They wore Jay out because he spent a lot of those days taking extra long naps.
Friday, Jason and I dropped Jay off with Grandma and Grandpa Peterson so we could go to the Iowa State fair. At the fair, I talked with some of the Brown Swiss people I knew, did some working exhibits, walked the barns, ate at the pork and beef tent and did a lot of walking. It ended up being a really nice day at the fair. A little overcast in the morning and fairly sunny in the afternoon and not supper hot or humid. Considering the 70% chance rain and the big front moving through Iowa that day, we were really lucky.
Jay had a good time with Grandma and Grandpa. They read books and sang. I guess they wore him out too since they said he napped a lot. I'm glad he was good for them and talked and smiled while he was there.
Saturday, Jason, Jay, our friend Adam and I went to visit our friend Tabitha since she wasn't able to go to the fair with us on Friday. She had one of her wisdom teeth pulled Friday afternoon. We grilled out for lunch and played some card and board games. We ended up getting home late, so we've been taking Sunday pretty easy. I think the most strenuous thing I've done so far is giving Jay a bath. And that's always more fun than work.

Visitors
We've had quite a few visitors at our house since August has started. We started with our friend Jeff who is back from Spain. He stayed for the week to look for jobs and help us out watching Jay while I worked at food service. During his stay, Grandpa and Grandma Peterson as well as Cyndy and Laureli stopped on their way up to Minneapolis. They had a good time holding Jay and talking. They didn't get to stay very long, but it was fun having them here!
We also had some unwanted visitors. Monday I noticed we had ants on our counter. I thought I had taken care of them until I came home from work on Wednesday. They were on the counter, on the cutting board and on the stove. I had to move the stove out where there were lots of ants under the stove. I spent most of the night cleaning and trying to figure out where they were coming from. I had to spray under the stove. I went and bought some ant traps. The next morning, they were all over the cutting board again. Jason looked up an ant killer on-line. I thought I had finally gotten it under control until I went to throw away something this morning and saw one of the pizza boxes had fallen on the floor and there were ants all over again. Using the on-line killer, I think they have gone away from that area. I'm just waiting to see where the next ant attack will be. We have gone to making sure all the dishes get washed every night, no food substance is on the floor and any dishes that were used for anything sweet has been rinsed off enough to not attract the ants back. It's been a long process and I hope we might actually have taken care of it.

Back to Work
I can't believe it's the last day of July. I go back to work tomorrow. Just for three days, but I can't believe it's time for me to go back already. The time has just flown by. Jay will be three months old on Tuesday and it doesn't feel that he should be that old! I am always amazed at what he can do and all of the smiles we can get out of him. He is a wonderful addition to our family!
I am looking forward to being done with work. I love to spend my time with Jay and am looking forward to continue to watching him grow! I am still looking for a medical transcription position to help with finances. I know everything will work out! For now, I am very happy with where my life is and am happy to know we have the support of both of our families and our friends!

Meeting Family
This last weekend we made a whirlwind trip to eastern Iowa. Jason didn't get off of work until 7pm, so we got a late start Friday night. The plan was to get to Miles around 11:30 that night. Unfortunately, once we hit Tama, it started to rain and lightning. Lots of lightning. Enough so that we decided to stay in Olin overnight.
We pushed on to Miles the next morning with some sweet corn from Olin in tow. We met up with Grandma Rosie, Grandpa Bubby, Jamie and Allegra at Pizza Ranch for supper. We left Miles the Sunday afternoon and stopped in Olin to pick up our basket we left for them to use. After some holding of the baby and packing up some sweet corn for ourselves (Thanks!), we headed back to Ames and the comfort of our own home.
It was a splendid weekend and I am very thankful Jay was able to meet more of his great-grandparents. We were able to spend some time with Jasper and Mason since Jamie and her three went to Mom and Dad's. There wasn't enough time to visit everyone, and it was hot, sticky and cloudy most of the weekend. No swimming in Mom and Dad's pool for us! There was lots of holding and snuggles though. Jay is very lucky to have such a wonderful family who loves him very much!
We found out that Jay likes to direct songs. We watched the "Music Man" and he had a blast. Mom helped him with his directing. (The video is dark because of where they were sitting in the living room.)

Welcome Back!
Our friends Jeff and Micheal are back from Spain, permanently. Jason picked them up in Des Moines and stopped by the house before driving them up to Mason City. We are very happy to have them closer to us once again. They did say they will be visiting people during this week and next since they have been gone for six years. We very happy to have them back!

Official
It's official. Thursday I went in to talk to my supervisor. My last day at Iowa State is August 3rd. Jason and I had talked about me going back to work for a long time. We got information about the day cares in Ames and it turns out, my entire paycheck would go to pay for Jay's daycare. That doesn't really work for us. So we decided I should stay at home instead. I am still working for a medical transcription job that I can do at home, but haven't had any luck yet. I am working three days in August to pay for our insurance for the summer. (Since I don't work during the summer, HR takes the extra money out in our first few paychecks.) We should also have insurance through the end of August. My supervisor was excited or me and said she understood, especially when I told her the minimum amounts for the different day cares. (We don't have a Y in Ames, much to our dismay.)
I'm very excited to be able to stay home. I would like to have had an at home job lined up, but I know everything will work out. Besides, who can resist such a cutie!

Vacation
We took our first family vacation last week. We traveled all the way up to Potato Lake in Minnesota (up by Bimiji). Jay traveled rather well for the seven hour drive there. We left late morning on Thursday and arrived at the cabin around 6pm. Our friend Pat was there with his girlfriend, Manni and her little girl, Breann. (Pat's step-dad owns the cabin.) Our friend Adam rode up with us. We did get into the lake and swim for a little bit Thursday night.
Matt, Tabitha, and Tabitha's kids, Zoe and Austin, arrived very early Friday morning. On Friday, we spent time in the boat tubing, riding and some of us went swimming. We did quite a bit of the same on Saturday. We watched some movies and the boys played the board game Axis and Allies. (A WWII game.) Saturday night we also had a bonfire where Manni and Breann had s'mores for the first time. Manni said they were much better than the cereal.
Sunday we spent the morning out on the lake again. Most of us left shortly after lunch to go home. Pat, Manni and Breann stayed to clean up the cabin a little, but were leaving very early Monday morning.
Jay did pretty well on the car ride home. He didn't sleep as much, but we all made it home. We spent today recovering from vacation. Jay and I slept most of the morning. We started doing some laundry, but it will take a couple of days to get caught up on that. We also went for a walk, regardless that it was still pretty warm and very sticky out.
We're very glad we were able to go on vacation and that we were able to spend time with our friends.

Happy Fourth
Yesterday was the Fourth of July. Jason's parents came down to visit, but mostly play/hold Jay. We went for a walk at Ada Hayden. It was a pretty nice day. The sun was shining and there was a gentle breeze. Jason's parents left before supper, but Adam came over to eat with us. We opted to not go to fireworks seeing as Jay is quite little yet and we didn't know how he would react. We watched a movie before Adam went home. It was a nice, relaxing day. I do think Jay has come down with a slight cold. He slept for 7 hours last night and has been sleeping for the last two. He sounds fairly congested. Hopefully he'll get over it quickly.

Welcome July
It has been quite hot and oppressive here in Ames in the last few days. Jay and I have been lucky enough to be inside for most of it. Yesterday Jay and I had to ride the bus to pick up the Pacifica, which was being worked on. We had to wait outside for the bus to show up and had to walk a little bit to get to the car place where the Pacifica was.
Not too long afterwards, Jay and I had to go to the doctor for Jay's after hospital check-up. I felt bad since it was the second time I had to wake Jay from a nap to take him somewhere. Once we got home from the doctor, he did take almost a three hour nap.
Today I ran errands, and while it was pretty nice when I started, it was quite warm and sticky by the time I got home. Granted, it was almost noon by the time I got back, but it was still hot.
Monday, we are going to attempt to go to the city's free pancake breakfast and the fourth of July parade. I'm not sure how hot or humid it's supposed to be on Monday, it will be quite an adventure though.

Cousins
While they might not be identical, Jay met his cousin Allegra, who is two days older than him, and cousins Jasper and Mason. He also met GREAT great-aunts Sara and Ann and aunt Jamie. Jay and I made a trek to Sara's house to meet some of our family.
We had a wonderful time. Jay was held by everyone except Allegra, obviously, and did pretty well. He did get a little fussy, but I think it was from being over tired or hungry. We did get a lot of pictures! I'm having trouble uploading them to the blog, but check them out on DropShots.
I was fortunate enough that my friend, Adam, agreed to come along. He was a life saver on the way there and back by feeding Jay when he got hungry and entertaining him. It would have taken a much longer time and I would have had an extremely purple from crying baby had Adam not been there to help. Of course, each time Jay wanted to eat, we weren't anywhere near a town to stop in. Adam also played Candy Land with the boys and Grandpa. Grandpa won and Adam came in second.
We got back to Ames around 6. Jay was fussy and slept for a little bit, but woke up shortly after Jason got home. We fed him again around 8 and he fell asleep. As of when I'm typing this, he's been asleep for almost two hours. He was a tired little boy.

Home Sweet Home
Jay was discharged from the hospital today! Before he was discharged, he had to eat some full strength formula with rice cereal and not vomit. He did very well, but still spit up. Especially when we were getting him ready to go home. I was a little worried they weren't going to let us leave, but we chalked it up to all the movement of changing him and getting him ready to go home. He's been a pretty happy baby since we've been home. He eats really well, still and has taken a couple of naps. He is on his antacid for 30 days, and then we'll re-evaluate the situation. Since Jay lost weight while in the hospital, he has an appointment Friday afternoon to make sure he is gaining weight at home.
Needless to say, we are extremely happy to be home and that Jay is healthy and happy. Thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers!

Hospital: Day 2
So Jay was put on partially digested formula last night, which smelled horrible! He couldn't keep that down either so it was back to the Pedialyte. He slept most of the night, so when I fed him at 8:30 this morning, he couldn't keep the Pedialyte down either. They came and took some blood for an electrolyte count. The on-call pediatrician came in (Dr. Halbur) and we asked about acid reflux. She thought that was a good idea to try and treat for it. He is now on an antacid and getting diluted formula with rice cereal. The new food seems to slow down his eating a little bit, but has also helped with the vomiting, so far. They turned down his IV down so he would be more hungry. He falls asleep shortly after he eats, but when he wakes up again, he is hungry! He starts crying like we're starving him, which we are not.
We received a blanket upon our admission to the hospital from www.projectlinus.org. It is an organization that makes and donates blankets to the pediatrics wings to hospitals. His new blanket has monkeys on it, which look just like the monkeys on the blanket we brought with us. It a nice flannel blanket which covers both Jay and me when we're sitting in the recliner. (That's why I've been choosing monkey backgrounds!) I'm hoping to be able to return the favor by making some blankets for them as well. Of course, I need some time and to get other projects done first.
Thank you to everyone for your prayers! We're hoping to be able to go home tomorrow, but I'll keep everyone posted!

Hospital
Yesterday morning, Jay was vomiting up his formula for the third day. He had been having slightly elevated temperatures (not higher than 99.7) and was not acting like himself. We called the doctor and they were able to schedule us right away. The doctor said to feed him 1 ounce of Pedialyte every half hour for a couple of hours, then up it to 2 ounces after three hours, and call back at 3. It was a very long afternoon for Jay and me. He just fall asleep from being upset at what little food he was getting when it was time to feed him again. I called at 3 and they said we could do some dilute formula. After a little bit of formula, he fell asleep. I let him sleep for two hours since he hadn't had a nap yet and was getting overly tired. He had some more formula after he woke up and vomited that back up. I was able to call the doctor office right before they closed at 7. They said to go back to the Pedialyte. When Jason got home, he fed Jay some Pedialyte that also was vomited back up. We had to call First Nurse who went through her checklist of questions and said that we were supposed to go to the emergency room. So, at about 9:30, we left for the ER.
While at the ER, they decided to put in an IV and draw some blood. They had to try 4different sites for the IV. Jay screamed a lot. They didn't get enough blood for the lab and wanted to pick a vein that hadn't been poked yet. That's when Jason and I both put our feet down and said they could do a heel stick, or they weren't getting any blood. His blood work came back all right, so they decided to admit us to the hospital so Jay could get an ultrasound of his tummy and keep him hydrated. Since he was on an IV drip, we didn't have to feed him overnight. He slept most of the night. Jason and I stayed in the room. The next morning, the doctor that had seen us Friday stopped to visit. He was the on-call doctor for Friday and stopped before he left for the day. He told us he had put in an ultrasound for 8. The nurse came in around 8:45 to ask when the last time Jay had eaten was. We didn't get to go to the ultrasound until 11:45. The ultrasound came back normal. The doctor said we could go to dilute formula. If he went 6 hours without vomiting, we could go to full strength formula and could go home.
Well, around 4:30, Jay started vomiting again. The nurse said to go back to the Pedialyte, which stays down, and we would have to wait for the new on-call doctor for any other directions. So we wait for the new doctor. Jay has gotten fussy again since being back on formula. We started to wonder if he might be allergic to something in the formula. But, we have to wait. At least the nurse and the room service are fairly reliable.

Passed
I passed my medical transcription class! I haven't gotten my final exam back, but my grade was posted on the website. I'm very excited, especially since I can officially look for a job! If anyone you know of is looking for an at-home medical transcriptionist, let me know!
This weekend, my parents came down to help us around the house. Dad and Jason took brush down to Pleasant Hill while Mom and I cleaned the house. Jay sat in his bouncy chair and watched when he wasn't sleeping. Dad also installed a new faucet in the kitchen or us. It's nicer than our other one because it arches and I can actually get stuff rinsed off and fill pots easier. They had a great time holding Jay. Dad had even called dibs to hold Jay first on Father's day. It was great to have them here and we are very thankful to them for all that they did!
Today it's back to normal. Jay and I slept most of the morning, Jason went to work, I've been reading, Jay's been eating and I'm working on freezing some meals. I have added looking for jobs, though, and am trying to keep on top of the cleaning so we don't let it pile up.
Can you hear me now?

Mom
I have joined FlyLady.com. Yup, I'm becoming more like my mom. (Not that it's a bad thing.) First, I had to change the toilet paper at Grandma and Grandpa Peterson's, now it's FlyLady. Like I said, it's not a bad thing. Since Jay has been born I've needed to become more organized and better at keeping my house clean. OK, I've needed to do that before Jay was born, I was just in denial. With my wanting to be a stay-at-home/work-at-home mom, I still needed a plan to be more organized and to find a balance of time to clean and time to work. (My work right now is looking for a job. It's more like a part-time job at the moment.) I think I'm off to a pretty good start. Jay doesn't have a set nap schedule, but he seems to get up around 7 and take a 2-3 hour nap shortly after I feed him. He stays awake for a little while, but not for very long. He may take a cat nap sometime between when he gets up and about 1 pm. He then sleeps for most of the afternoon and evening. Of course we don't go to bed until between 10:30 and midnight most nights, but Jason likes to spend time with Jay too and he doesn't get home until after 7. We're working on a schedule, but I know it will be months yet before we actually get one down.

Anniversary
Jason and I are blessed. We have been married for seven years, have a beautiful baby boy, and wonderful families. Our families have blessed us with the gift of helping out. Jennifer, Mike, Ethan and Audrey were here on Thursday to help clean our house. They cleaned our kitchen and bathroom, Ethan washed dishes and cleaned a sink (with Jennifer supervising). Mike was nice enough to change the battery in our Pacifica that had gone dead the night before, and change the handle on our side screen door that wasn't cooperative in opening.
Yesterday, Jason's parents and grandma came out. Grandma Rose held and fed Jay and even got him to nap for several hours. Jason and his parents worked outside trimming bushes, plants, cutting down unwanted trees and working in the backyard. They piled all the brush us and now we have several loads of brush to take somewhere. (We haven't determined where yet.) Our house looks a lot nicer now!
This is just some of the brush they were able to remove from our yard.
This is the front of our house. Notice how we actually have a sidewalk!
Next weekend, my parents are coming out to help with what didn't get done. And to spend time with Jay, of course.
As I said before, Jason and I are truly blessed. I know we will continue to be blessed, especially with Jay and our families. Thank you all very much!

Dry
Since Jay was born, I have been having trouble with producing enough milk for him to eat. We had been bottle feeding him since he was four days old since he was jaundiced and wasn't getting enough food to help get rid of it. I was still having problems with milk production after that and had called the lactation consultant at the hospital to ask for advice. She suggested to take fenugreek pills. I started taking the pills, and at the suggestion of Jennifer, drinking Mother's Milk tea (kinda tastes like licorice). There wasn't much improvement, but I did start having blocked ducts. I was able to handle getting rid of the blocked ducts on my own. A few weeks ago, I started having some pain and firmness in my right breast. When I went to see the lactation consultant, she thought it could be a lot of blocked ducts clumped together since I didn't have a fever or any other flu like symptoms for it to be mastitis. After a few days of different methods to get rid of the "blocked ducts" and still feeling fine without a fever, I went to the doctor. She was pretty stumped as well. She was sure it wasn't mastitis either. She talked to the lactation consultant and they called me back. They had decided that my right breast was engorged like my body had decided to stop producing milk. They didn't know why, and were worried that I wouldn't be able to produce enough milk once my breast had healed. So, I decided to listen to my body and stop brestfeeding. It was becoming very stressful. I would breastfeed Jay, then feed him a bottle, then pump to try to help stimulate milk production. The whole feeding cycle was taking almost an hour and a half. I felt like Jason or I was feeding Jay all the time. It wasn't an easy decision, but hopefully I'll be able to spend more time with my family and worrying about dirty diapers!

Memorial Day
We've had a fairly busy week. My mom came down last Wednesday to help out and play with Jay. She left Friday, but not before Jay pooped on her. It was really nice to have her here to help out. Saturday, Jason, Jay and I left for a trip to Olin. We had family reunions on both of Jason's side of the family. Well, not quite a reunion, more like a get together. Jason's cousin, Brooke, and her husband, Rick, were visiting. Brooke is due with their little boy, Oliver, in September. It was fun seeing Jason's family. There were people who were more than happy to hold Jay, especially Jason's mom.
We came back Monday. Jay was a little fussy and I had a headache, but it was very hot and humid on Monday. Once we got home, Jay calmed down a bit. My headache started to go away. Of course, I've had a headache most of the week due to the weather. Jay keeps me busy even though he still sleeps quite a bit. He is more active during the week, and still cute as ever!

Weekend
We had a busy weekend with visitors. My sister, Jordan, came for a visit on Thursday. She had a lot of fun taking pictures of Jay on her phone. This was my favorite one:
She left to go to Des Moines to see our grandparents on Saturday morning. That afternoon, Jennifer, Mike, Ethan and Audrey came to visit. Jennifer and Mike held Jay while Ethan and Audrey played with various things. They especially liked being in the backyard throwing a ball around. They also volunteered to help watch Jay so I could get a haircut. They decided to go to the zoo down in Des Moines on Sunday, but we had breakfast with them before they left. Ethan told us about how he got to go swimming at the hotel.
Saturday night, we went to our friend's house for supper. We really appreciated at not having to think or cook something for supper. Of course, a storm came up really fast and we had to go home to shut windows. Of course Jay decided that he was hungry every one and a half to two hours so we were up fairly late. I'm getting use to it. Jay and I usually take a nap after breakfast...and sometimes after lunch.

2 Weeks
Today I had my 2 week post partum check up. (I can't believe it's already been two weeks!) The doctor said everything sounds fine and I can start doing some exercises including walking! It's been nice most of the time we've been home so I've been itching to get outside and walk.
Jason has been back to work, but wishes he could stay at home. He loves to hold Jay and chase Zara around the house. Not at the same time, of course. He has been riding his motorcycle to work and loving it. It's been warm enough to ride, but cool enough to wear all of his gear. Maybe he'll be able to grill this weekend making it feel more like summer.

More Pictures
While we were in the hospital, Jay had professional pictures taken.
The website is:

Feel free to look at the pictures! You may also order some if you would like. I do not believe Jason and I will be buying very many, if we do at all, so don't feel pressured to get any!

Visitors
Today Grandma and Grandpa Peterson and Martha stopped by to meet Jay. He was good while they were here and even kept his eyes open. Grandma got to feed him and Grandpa told him stories. They didn't stay for very long, but I'm sure we'll go visit them soon.
Jason ran some errands today and realized how much it hurts to put gas in our Pacifica. He put more money into our tank than he did buying some supplies and groceries. We're hoping gas prices come down a little bit in Ames since the students will no longer be here after this weekend. (Gas prices like to go up when the students leave in masses.)
Zara continues being a stitch. Last night, she was playing with one of her mousie toys and was doing half somersaults down the hallway. She has been loving when we open the windows and spends quite a bit of time sunning herself on our deep freezer.

Business
So, needless to say I missed my last week of work for the semester. I had an extremely good reason! The last week has been a pretty big blur for us. Jamie had her little girl, Allegra. Jason and I went to visit some friends. I had our little boy, Jay. We've had a few visitors, and Jason has been doing a lot to help out. He has been doing a great job at making sure I get enough rest, food, water and reassurance. He even made a batch of pulled pork for us to freeze and eat over the rest of the summer.
We're going to have more visitors this weekend. Hopefully, we'll be able to get into a routine soon and I'll be able to take some time to finish my class.

Rain, Rain
Our friend Brooke came to visit us over VEISHA weekend. We had a good time catching up with her. It had been a long time since we have seen her. She is in chiropractic school and doing really well. We wish her the best of luck and know she'll be a wonderful chiropractor!
We have also had rain on and off for the last two weeks. It's been nice because everything has started to turn green and some of the flowers are blooming. It's not so nice because everything is soggy and more often than not, I get a slight headache from the front that comes through. It's also hard to get out of bed when it is still gray outside.
I'm starting my last packet for my on-line class. I'm hoping to get it done before the end of the semester and I am unemployed for the summer. My last day of work is May 6th for this semester. I'm still doing well in the class and have been enjoying it. If anyone has any leads on an at-home medical transcriptionist job, please let me know!
Really the only other thing that is new is I'm trying "new" recipes. We have some good stuff at food service and I'm improvising them at home, usually adding different things than what they have to make it better, or at least more to our liking. It's been working out so far. I may even post one of the recipes for everyone to try!

Sick...again
Yesterday I stayed home with a sinus migraine. It was the worst one I have ever had. I woke up with it at 3 am and it didn't start going away until sometime in the afternoon. I also wore my sunglasses most of the day, even inside. I tried all of the home remedies and none of them worked. It did convince my doctor that maybe I should be on an antibiotic for the sinus infection I have. I did go back to work today and things went all right. The baby has still been very active through the whole ordeal, so nothing to worry about there. Zara has been my protector, kneading my legs, then falling asleep in my lap. She's very ferocious!

VEISHA
We had a good doctors appointment today. The heartbeat was good and we go back in two weeks. Check out the baby website for more details!
It's VEISHA this week and it's supposed to snow on the weekend. Jason volunteered to pick up some late night hours over the weekend. I'm lucky enough to not have to work. We were planning on going to see some stuff on Saturday, but with the predicted snow and cold temperatures, we've opted out of making sure we go to VEISHA. It's been slow at work for me so far because they have free lunches and lots of activities on campus that the students participate in. Jason's job has also been slow since the weather has been pretty nice.
I'm done with my physical therapy for my back. I still have pain, but it's not as often and I know how to manage it better. My physical therapist said to continue with the exercises after I have the baby (not the same day, of course) and to try to continue avoiding stairs for a while after birth as well. I have noticed my back hurts more when I use the stairs more often than I should. Jason has been better about helping me to not go up and down the stairs. He has also been helping by rubbing my back and helping with ideas for the summer.

Sick
Jason started getting sick last Thursday night. We still went to Galena with some friends over the weekend where Jason developed a really nasty cough and a burning sensation through his lungs. He was taking decongestants to help with his sinus pressure. We got home Sunday evening where we slept on the couch to help Jason drain. Monday, Jason called in sick to work and he went to the doctor. He has an ear infection, sinus infection and bronchial infection. They put him on some drugs and antibiotics. Today was the first day he felt well enough to go back to work. It wore him out though, he took a nap when he got home.
I started to feel very exhausted this week and started to get some sinus pressure yesterday. I stayed home and went to the doctor today. I have the beginning of a sinus infection, but they won't put me on antibiotics unless it gets worse over the next week. I was told to keep taking Tylenol and start taking some Sudafed for the congestion. I spent most of the day in and out of sleep on the couch. I'm glad I have tomorrow off of work. The baby is still moving up a storm, so the infection hasn't seemed to slow the baby down any. Of course it's been getting a lot of orange juice today!
We started our parenting class last night. It was interesting. The session last night talked a lot about what a newborn will possibly look like right after it's born and for the next few hours afterwards. It also showed us how to do infant massage. Next week we learn about basic care.

New Blog
I know, I know. How many blogs do I have to have? This one is strictly for the baby and any baby specific news. I started this one so my co-workers can see what's going on while I'm on leave over the summer. This blog is supposed to be for family and close friends, however, here is the address for the baby blog:
http://members.babiesonline.com/home/slaterfamily/
Please feel free to check on it. There probably won't be a whole lot posted until after the baby is born (and once I get some time to work on it!). There is a place for pictures, movies, milestones and a guestbook. Have fun keeping up with the new blog!

Appointment
We went to the doctor today. Everything is fine and the heartbeat was 150. Last night the baby kicked so hard it moved the laptop! Jason's mom said that Jason used to kick really hard too. It's already taking after him! We go back again in two weeks.

Getting Closer
The baby's room is starting to shape up. We've gotten most of the stuff that doesn't need to be in there out. The clothes and bedding are all put away. We still need to put together the crib and changing table. Jason did get the bassinet put together today. It's a step.
We've also been dealing with a lot of people who are sick at work. I was the only full-time person in the dish room for most of the week. There was one point that I was the only person in the dish room because the students were sick. Strep throat is going around CyRide. We've been lucky enough to not catch anything. We've been trying to get enough sleep. I've been having some trouble with not sleeping well, but it's all worth it.
We have about two months left to go, but plenty to do to get ready. I've started making a list of food to try to freeze so we won't have to cook quite as much.

Our Spring Break
Last night, Jason and I had our last childbirth education class. We learned about the different medications and got to see a tour of the labor rooms. I'm not sure if we're prepared, but we're as ready as we're going to be.
We also saw the doctor today. Everything is going well and the baby's heartbeat was 144. We go back again on the 30th. The baby is moving up a storm most days. Jason has only felt it kick once, but he keeps trying. He thinks the baby is shy with him around. I'm still having back pain, but with physical therapy, it seems to be getting better.
We are getting a little of the baby's room done. I've sorted through most of our stuff to get an idea if we need anything else and to start putting the room in a little semblance of order. Here are some pictures of the room before we really started making an effort to get it in order:

As you can see, we have our work cut out for us!

Shower
It was quite a busy weekend. I had Friday off and spent most of the afternoon running errands which included renewing my driver's license. I did a little work around the house, but not too much.
Saturday I picked up Grandma Peterson and we headed off to eastern Iowa to go to my baby shower. We had a lot of fun and received many gifts that we greatly appreciate! It was great to see everyone who showed up. After the shower, Grandma went with Ann to her house and I went to Mom and Dad's. We got pizza and spent the night talking.
I went to church with Mom and Dad on Sunday. Afterwards, I headed to Olin to go to Audrey's first birthday party. I didn't get to stay for very long. I had a carload of stuff that we needed to get unpacked. Jason and I got it all in the house and went out to supper with some friends.
Jason did get some work done on the baby room. Our friends Adam and Tabitha came up to keep Jason company. We both have this weekend off again, so hopefully we'll be able to get a lot more done on the room.
Thank you again to all who attended the shower and for all the wonderful gifts we received!

Busy Days
We had our second childbirth class tonight. We went through the different stages of labor and some breathing techniques. We did practice some of the breathing. It is also snowing....again. The rumor was 4 to 8 inches overnight. I'm hoping that most of it will melt than stick.
This weekend we went to Olin to help Jason's parents celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary. We sang at church as a family and had lunch together. Jason and I spent some time playing with Ethan and Audrey. Jennifer gave us her bassinet for the baby. We saw a lot of Jason's family and had a good time.

Doctor Appointment
We went to the doctor again today. I had the glucose test (tasted like Sprite syrup) which they also tested for if there were antibodies against the baby and if I was anemic. The tests came back normal (yay!)and the heartbeat was 134. I also talked to the doctor about my back pain and she recommended I go to physical therapy. They were able to get me in today and the therapist recommended to get a different belly band, stop using stairs, twist my whole body and not my torso, keep walking - especially in a pool. I have a few exercises I'm supposed to do, along with the ones from our childbirth class. They are not worried about pre-eclampsia at this point either. My blood pressure was good.
We are still working on moving stuff around the house. I've taken some stuff upstairs to start making space for baby stuff. Nothing too heavy though. Hopefully Jason and I will be able to start spending more time on it in the next week or so.

Class
Tonight was our first night of childbirth education class. We talked about the differences between false labor and true labor, when to go to the hospital and different relaxation techniques. We did some of the relaxation techniques and also went over some massaging methods. The instructor said our homework was to practice these techniques as well as some stretching exercises. We watched a video of some relaxation techniques a couple used during birth. We have two more sessions for this class, then in April we are taking a parenting class.

Vacation
Jason and I went on a mini-vacation this weekend to Waterloo. We had earned a free night at a Country Inn and Suites. The room was huge and it was nice to spend some time and relax. We did get some time at the Imaginarium on Saturday (we got a late start in the day). We saw a demonstration on snakes, and even got to pet some. Jason made me stand by the Vander Graff generator to watch my hair stand on end.
We met with Kyla and Dave who gave us some of their old baby stuff. (I think they were more than happy to get rid of it!) We also had supper with their family along with Pat, Adam, Sarah and her boys. We went to Olive Garden and it was excellent. Pat, Adam, Sarah and the boys came to hang out in the hotel with us after supper. The boys had a great time running back and forth from one side to the other.
Today, Jason and I went to the Crossroads Mall and walked for a while. We had lunch at Longhorn Steakhouse. We decided that we wanted to go home since the weather was not cooperating very well. The roads weren't slick on the way home, but were on the verge.
When we got home, we got to see all of the new windows that were installed while we gone and the house is so much warmer and quieter.

Warmer
Happy Valentine's Day!
This weekend we got five new windows put into our house. They were put in the living room and the baby's room. It is so much quieter in those rooms and much warmer upstairs. We decided not to keep the blinds on the living room windows since they were pretty dingy and fraying. I need to make curtains, so who knows how long it will take to get our privacy back.
And today, both Jason and I went to our doctors. Jason has apparently sprained some muscles in his upper right chest and will go to physical therapy next week. I have too much tension in my neck from over-compensating for carrying the baby. We both stayed home from work to try to heal enough to not be in constant discomfort. I also have been having a lot of nausea lately and the doctor told me to try vitamin B6 with a half tablet of Unisom. Of course I can only take that at night and hopefully it will help me sleep at night so I'll get more rest and have less tension.

Vet
Today I took Zara to the vet. We had to buy a bigger carrier for her, which she completely inspected. I put a towel in there and she went right in and laid down. Once we got her in the Pacifica, she cried the entire way to the vet. She was a very good girl while we were at the vet. She had her temperature taken and had a distemper booster shot. She never cried out and sat fairly still. However, she did cry all the way home again. She did sleep on my lap all afternoon, and she was even given some soft food for being such a good girl. The vet did give us some eye drops for her weepy eye. Hopefully it will help to clear it up for a while.

Progress
We've been busy with visitors this past week. Mom and Dad came for the weekend after staying with Grandma and Grandpa for a night and helping out with some stuff. Jason's family was here to go look at some bulls for their herd. Both visits were pretty quick, but much appreciated. Of course the weather was cold so we spent the time inside.
I looked at my progress on my class and I am apparently halfway through the class. I'm still trying to work on the class everyday. Of course every time I work on the class, the baby kicks and moves. It's a good motivator.
I've also signed us up for childbirth and parenting classes. It's starting to become very real for us. We still need to work on the baby's room, but I did get the baby quilt done. One step at a time!

Ultrasound 2
We went to the doctor again today. We needed to have another ultrasound since the baby didn't cooperate last time and the tech couldn't see all of the heart. The baby was sort of more cooperative in that we could see all of the heart, but decided to sleep the entire time, so we didn't really get to see much. The tech said the heart rate was 126, which is normal for a sleeping baby. She also said the baby was in a ball and that its head was resting on its calf. (Wouldn't be nice to be that flexible?) Everything looks good and the estimated weight of our baby is 1 pound and 7 ounces today. I have been feeling the baby move and kick. Unfortunately, Jason isn't able to yet. Hopefully in just a few more weeks. I do need to get some new maternity pants for work. The ones I have are starting to get a little snug around the waist.
We also had quite the snowstorm this week. ISU cancelled it after 5 classes on Tuesday and cancelled morning classes on Wednesday. It's not that it snowed that much (6 or 7 inches here), but it was so windy! We couldn't see the roads very well in town let alone on the highway. A lot of the out of town people I work with stayed in Ames Tuesday night, courtesy of ISU or friends. We've recovered nicely. I had Wednesday scheduled off so I spent the day at home working on my class. I got quite a bit done, but still have a lot to do. Jason had me reschedule Zara's vet appointment so I wouldn't drive anywhere. I'm sure Zara didn't mind at all since she was due for a booster shot. It was nice being home for the day. I also have the weekend off and will spend some time with Mom and Dad since they decided to come down and visit. I'm not sure what we're going to do yet, but I'm sure we'll all have a good time.

Preparation
In preparation for our baby, we have only decided on a few things. Where the baby's room will be, what to do with the stuff that's in there, what hospital to go to and if I want drugs during labor. (I do.) We have narrowed down a few other things. We have only a couple of colors we're looking at for the baby's room. (Sorry, Mom! I think the orange will be too dark.) We've also taken a look at some of the major purchases we'll be needing and making a few decisions. Of course, with one decision usually comes 20 more because of the decision made. We are trying our best to keep on top of things.
We have gone through a lot of stuff that we are ready to get rid of, once we have the time to do that. Several boxes of clothes, a box of miscellaneous things and some boxes that I need to figure out where to recycle them. Once we move some stuff out, we end up getting something to fill the space. It seems like a never ending cycle. I know it'll only get worse! Hopefully we'll be able to work a lot more once it gets a little warmer and easier to get around town.

Information
Just a quick note to let everyone know that we're doing all right! Jason has been frustrated with the weather since it coincided with the students being back. Quite a few schools cancelled on Tuesday and he ended up staying late at work on Monday. Things did quiet down for him a little bit by the end of the week.
I've been busy training and re-training student workers. I have also realized I can no longer stock dishes since it makes my back hurt too much. That's what the students are for, though, as the list of what I can do keeps getting smaller.
Zara has been a little on the clingy side lately. It doesn't take her long to cuddle up with me on the couch. She also underfoot as soon as I get home and doesn't get out of the way until I pick her up. She does the same thing with Jason if he gets home first.
The baby has been moving quite a bit. I think I may have felt a kick the other day, but it was pretty brief, so I'm not sure. I have been eating a variety of foods so the baby will hopefully not be a really picky eater. The books we have say the baby can taste what I eat, so Jason is making sure that I eat sauerkraut, ice cream and Mountain Dew (just a little) so the baby will like some of the foods he likes too.

Official
It's official. I am no longer a probationary worker for Iowa State....again. I finished my six month probation term yesterday and was told my "report" was sent over to human resources. I got a satisfactory in all categories. (It's either satisfactory or unsatisfactory.) It sounds like everyone likes working with me and that I'm very willing to volunteer to help with things, as long as the dish room doesn't need my help at the time. While it isn't my preferred job, it does give me some satisfaction that management likes my work ethic and my attitude. It doesn't hurt that they've been very clear about me and my baby come first and they are willing to help me with that.

Oh Baby!
We had our 20 week ultrasound this afternoon. We got some really god pictures and a really cute video.
That's right! Our baby was tired while getting poked and prodded that it yawned! The tech told us everything looked normal and gave us a lot of pictures. Unfortunately, since our baby decided to be difficult, we have to go back for another ultrasound at our next appointment to see if we can see all the chambers of the heart. We did get to see the heart and watch it beat, but only two chambers. The heartbeat was 144, which is normal. We did not find out the sex of the baby, so don't ask! I don't think the tech was able to see the sex anyway.
My doctor appointment went well also. I had a new midwife, but she was really nice. I have my next appointment with her in February. Jason wasn't able to see the doctor with me, but he was there for the ultrasound. We're both very thankful for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. We're starting to decide where some furniture should be moved so we can start putting the baby things in it's room. It'll be a long process, but we need to get it done. The sooner the better!

Happy New Year
So, it's not the first anymore, but I haven't turned my computer on until after midnight. We are spending the first weekend of the year in Independence with some of our friends and I lost track of time. That's not really a big surprise with this group. WE have lots of fun and tons of laughs!
We will be home tomorrow evening since Jason and I have to work on Monday, me at six in the morning. It will be interesting to get back to work, but the days will go by quickly and soon we will be welcoming home our baby (and it's always good to see our kitty)!
We pray that all of our friends and family have a happy and prosperous new year.
